How to Set Up and Load a Modpack in Hytale

Setting up a “modpack” in Hytale involves compiling a collection of individual modifications, known as Packs and/or Plugins, to customize your game experience. Unlike some other games where a “modpack” is a single, distinct file, in Hytale, it refers to the process of installing and configuring multiple mods to run together. The game offers robust built-in management features, alongside support for third-party tools, to streamline this process.
Understanding Hytale Modding: Packs vs. Plugins
Before diving into installation, it’s crucial to understand Hytale’s two primary mod types:
- Packs: These are content creation mods that primarily add or modify game assets such as blocks, items, models, textures, sounds, and behaviors. Packs generally do not require coding knowledge and are often created using in-game tools like the Asset Editor. When installed, a Pack is typically a folder containing a
manifest.jsonfile and various asset subfolders. - Plugins: These mods extend the game’s functionality, introducing new features or complex gameplay mechanics. Plugins are written in Java and leverage Hytale’s API. They come as
.jarfiles and are primarily designed for server-side execution, though some may have client-side components.
Hytale is designed with a strong emphasis on server-side modding. This means that if you join a modded server, the server often handles the mod loading, and you may not need to install client-side mods yourself. However, for single-player worlds or client-specific visual modifications, you will need to install mods locally.
Method 1: Using a Third-Party Mod Manager (Recommended for Multiple Mods)
For players looking to manage several mods or entire collections, third-party mod managers offer a more streamlined and user-friendly experience, often integrating directly with mod distribution platforms like CurseForge.
1. Choose a Mod Manager
Several tools are being developed to simplify Hytale mod management:
- HyPrism: A cross-platform launcher (Windows, Linux, macOS) that aims to provide built-in mod management, including discovery, installation, version selection, and updates directly from CurseForge.
- Hytale Mod Manager: A standalone Windows tool designed to automatically locate your Hytale mods folder, validate installed mods, and present them in a clean interface. It may also offer features like SFTP for remote server management.
- nyoUpdates: An in-game plugin that provides fast update checks and an in-game user interface for browsing, installing, and managing mods directly from CurseForge. Note that installing nyoUpdates itself requires an initial manual mod installation or another manager.
2. Install the Mod Manager
Follow the specific installation instructions for your chosen manager. This usually involves downloading an executable or an application package and running it.
3. Obtain Mods
- Through the Manager: Many mod managers, like HyPrism or nyoUpdates, integrate with CurseForge, allowing you to browse and install mods directly from within their interface. This is often the easiest method.
- Manual Download: If your chosen manager supports importing, or for mods not directly browsable, you can manually download
.jarfiles (for Plugins) or zipped pack folders (for Packs) from CurseForge or other trusted sources.
4. Install Mods via Manager
Use the mod manager’s interface to add the downloaded mods. Typically, you’ll have an “Install” or “Add Mod” button. The manager will handle placing the files in the correct Hytale directories and performing initial validation.
5. Activate Mods In-Game (Client-Side)
Once mods are installed via a manager, you still need to activate them within Hytale for your specific worlds:
- Launch Hytale.
- Navigate to the “Worlds” tab from the main menu.
- Right-click on the specific world you wish to play with the modpack.
- Look for a “Manage Mods” or similar option.
- Toggle on the desired Packs and Plugins from the list. Hytale will display all recognized mods in your
UserData/Modsfolder. - Confirm your selections and enter the world. The game will load with the activated mods.
Method 2: Manual Installation (for Client and Server)
Manual installation gives you direct control over your mod files and is essential if you’re setting up a server or troubleshooting.
1. Download Mods
Acquire the mod files from a reputable source, primarily CurseForge. You will typically download:
- Plugins: As
.jarfiles. - Packs: Often as zipped folders. Unzip these to reveal the main pack folder (which should contain a
manifest.jsonfile).
Always ensure you download the correct version of the mod compatible with your Hytale client or server version.
2. Locate Hytale Mods Folder
The location for mod files depends on whether you’re installing for your client or a server:
- Client (Windows): The primary location is
%APPDATA%\Hytale\user_data\mods. You can quickly access this by typing%APPDATA%\Hytaleinto your Windows search bar or File Explorer address bar, then navigating toUserData\Mods. Alternatively, within the Hytale Launcher, click the cogwheel icon (Settings) and select “Open Directory,” then navigate toUserData/Mods. - Server: For a dedicated Hytale server, navigate to your server’s root directory. There should be a
/modsfolder within it. If not, create one.
3. Place Mod Files
Copy the downloaded and prepared mod files into the correct mods directory:
- Plugins: Place the
.jarfiles directly into themodsfolder. Do not unzip.jarfiles. - Packs: Place the entire pack folder (e.g.,
MyAwesomePack, which containsmanifest.json) into themodsfolder. Each pack should reside in its own subfolder withinmods. For example:...\UserData\Mods\MyAwesomePack\manifest.json.
4. Activate Mods In-Game (Client-Side)
If you’ve installed client-side mods manually, follow the same activation steps as outlined in Method 1 (Step 5) to enable them for your specific worlds.
5. Launch Server (Server-Side Mods)
If you’ve installed mods on a Hytale server, simply restart or launch your Hytale server. The server will detect and load the mods placed in its /mods directory automatically. Players joining this server will typically have these mods loaded for them without needing to install anything client-side.
Tips for Modpack Management
- CurseForge is Key: CurseForge is the primary platform for discovering and downloading Hytale mods. It’s often the most reliable source for up-to-date and compatible files.
- Built-in Management: Hytale’s native mod management features allow you to enable or disable mods on a per-world basis, offering great flexibility without needing to move files around.
- Version Compatibility: Always check the mod’s description for compatibility with your current Hytale game version. Using outdated mods is a common cause of issues.
- Backup Your Worlds: Before installing a large number of mods or a complex modpack, always back up your world saves. This safeguards your progress if something goes wrong.
- Read Mod Descriptions: Pay close attention to any specific installation instructions, dependencies (other mods required), or known conflicts mentioned by the mod authors.
Common Mistakes
- Incorrect Mod Folder: Placing mod files in the wrong directory is the most frequent error. Double-check the path:
%APPDATA%\Hytale\user_data\modsfor client installations. - Not Activating Mods: For client-side installations, mods must be explicitly toggled on for specific worlds within the Hytale game client after being placed in the mods folder.
- Unzipping
.jarFiles: Plugin files (.jar) should not be unzipped; they need to be placed directly into themodsfolder as is. - Ignoring Dependencies: Some mods require other mods to function. Failing to install these “dependency” mods will cause the main mod to fail or the game to crash.
- Outdated Mods: Using mods that are not compatible with your current Hytale game version can lead to crashes, unexpected behavior, or simply the mod not working.
- Confusing Server vs. Client Mods: Understand whether a mod is intended for the client, the server, or both. Hytale’s design means many server-side mods do not require client installation.
