How to Password-Protect Your Hytale Server

Password-protecting your Hytale server is a straightforward process that allows you to restrict access to a private group of players. This method ensures that only individuals with the correct password can join your server, making it ideal for friends, guilds, or specific community events. While Hytale launched into early access on January 13, 2026, the core mechanics for server management, including password protection, are designed to be user-friendly.
Understanding Hytale Server Password Protection
The fundamental principle behind Hytale server password protection is simple: any player attempting to connect to your server will be prompted to enter a specific code. If the provided code matches the password set by the server owner, the player is granted access. If the password is incorrect or not provided, the connection will be denied. This acts as a primary barrier to entry, ensuring that your private Hytale world remains exclusive to your intended audience. It’s important to note that while effective for privacy, a password offers a different level of security compared to a whitelist, which explicitly permits only pre-approved player identities.
Exact Steps to Password-Protect Your Hytale Server
The method you’ll use to set a password for your Hytale server primarily depends on whether you are utilizing a third-party hosting service or managing a self-hosted server directly from your own machine. Both approaches are effective, but involve different interfaces for configuration.
For Hosted Servers (Using a Control Panel)
Most Hytale server hosting providers offer an intuitive web-based control panel to simplify server management. This is typically the easiest way to configure settings like passwords.
- Log in to your hosting provider’s control panel. Access your account dashboard through your web browser. Common providers include Apex Hosting, BisectHosting, Wabbanode, and LOW.MS, among others, each with their own unique panel interface.
- Stop your Hytale server. Before making any configuration changes, it is absolutely critical to stop your server. Attempting to modify settings while the server is running can lead to changes not being saved, being overwritten upon restart, or even data corruption. Look for a “Stop” or “Turn Off” button in your control panel.
- Navigate to the configuration files or server settings. This section is often clearly labeled as “Config Files,” “Hytale Server Settings,” “Server Configuration,” or similar. You might find a direct option for server properties or a file manager to access specific configuration files.
-
Locate the “Password” field or setting. Within the server settings interface, there should be a designated field for setting a server password. In some advanced panels or if you’re using a file editor within the panel, you might need to directly edit the
config.jsonfile. -
Enter your desired password. Type your chosen password into the designated field. If you are directly editing a
config.jsonfile through a text editor in your control panel, ensure the password is enclosed in double quotation marks, for example:"Password": "MySecretPassword". Choose a strong, memorable password. - Save the changes. After entering the password, always click the “Save” or “Apply Changes” button within your hosting panel to ensure your new settings are stored.
- Start your Hytale server. Once the changes are saved, you can now start your Hytale server. Players attempting to join will immediately be prompted to enter the password you just set.
For Self-Hosted Servers (Editing config.json Directly)
If you are running your Hytale server on your own hardware, you will need to directly access and modify the server’s configuration files.
- Stop your Hytale server. Just as with hosted servers, it is paramount to shut down your Hytale server completely before making any manual edits to its configuration files. This prevents conflicts and ensures your changes are correctly applied.
-
Locate the
config.jsonfile. This crucial configuration file is typically found in the main directory where your Hytale server software is installed. It’s important to distinguish between the server’s primaryconfig.jsonand potential world-specific configuration files, which might be located underuniverse/worlds/<world_name>/. For a server-wide password, ensure you are editing the top-levelconfig.json. -
Open
config.jsonusing a text editor. Use a plain text editor such as Notepad (Windows), TextEdit (macOS), or Notepad++ / VS Code for more advanced options. Avoid word processors as they can introduce formatting that corrupts the JSON structure. -
Find the “Password” line. Scan the
config.jsonfile for an entry related to “Password.” If it doesn’t exist, you may need to add it. The typical format is a key-value pair. -
Add or modify your chosen password. Insert your desired password between the double quotation marks. For example, the line should look like this:
"Password": "YourStrongPassword". Ensure proper JSON syntax, including the comma if it’s not the last entry in its block. -
Save the
config.jsonfile. After making your changes, save the file. Make sure it retains its.jsonextension and remains a plain text file. -
Start your Hytale server. With the updated
config.jsonsaved, you can now restart your Hytale server. Players will now be required to enter the password to gain entry.
For In-Game Online Play (Temporary Password for Single-Player Worlds)
Hytale also offers a convenient way to temporarily share your single-player world with friends, complete with an optional password. This is ideal for impromptu co-op sessions without needing a dedicated server.
- Load into your single-player world. Start Hytale and enter the world you wish to share.
-
Press
ESCto open the pause menu. This will bring up the in-game menu overlay. - Click “Online Play.” This option is specifically designed for managing temporary multiplayer access to your current world.
- Toggle “Allow Other Players to Join” to ON. This activates the ability for others to connect to your world.
- (Optional) Set a password to restrict access. Below the “Allow Other Players to Join” toggle, you will find an option to set a password. Enter your desired temporary password here.
- (Optional) Toggle “Include Password in Share Code.” If you want the password to be automatically embedded when you share your world’s connection code, enable this option. This can simplify the joining process for your friends.
- Click “Save.” Confirm your settings. Your single-player world is now shareable, and if you set one, password-protected for others to join.
Important Tips for Password Protection
- Choose a strong, unique password: While password protection is not as robust as a whitelist, a complex and unique password significantly deters unauthorized access. Avoid common words or easily guessable sequences.
-
Always stop your server before editing
config.json: This cannot be stressed enough. Modifying configuration files while the server is active is a common cause of lost settings, server instability, or data corruption. - Share the password only with trusted players: The effectiveness of your password protection relies entirely on the discretion of those who know it. Only provide the password to individuals you explicitly want on your server.
- Consider a whitelist for maximum security: For truly private servers where security is paramount, implementing a whitelist is superior. A whitelist allows only players whose unique Hytale ID or username are explicitly listed to join, regardless of whether they know the password. You can typically enable and manage a whitelist through your server’s console commands or control panel.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Editing
config.jsonwhile the server is running: As mentioned, this is a critical error. The server’s running state might overwrite your manual changes upon shutdown, or it could lead to the server failing to start correctly. -
Using special characters that break JSON formatting: When manually editing
config.json, be cautious with characters like double quotes ("), backslashes (\), or other JSON control characters within your password. These can corrupt the JSON file, preventing the server from reading its configuration. Stick to alphanumeric characters and common symbols. - Forgetting to save and restart the server: After making any changes to your server’s configuration, whether through a control panel or direct file editing, you must always save the changes and then restart the Hytale server for those changes to take effect. Without a restart, the server will continue to operate with its previous settings.
